Caribou has been playing on my ipod for quite some time now. Idk why it is I like it so much, but I think it's the weird mix of unconventional sounds and overall catchiness. Canadian group Caribou describes their genre as "psychedelic" and really that's probably the only word that can describe their particular approach.

I'm usually not a fan of that outwardly hipster nu-rave dance shit, but I have always been a sucker for Culture Prophet. This music video was just produced by a student and it is amazing. The editing must have taken 2w3523523 years, but it was well worth it.

Remember the poppy-synth-y schizo-mania of Ima Robot? Enter Alex Ebert, vocalist of Ima Robot. After a tragic breakup, Ebert realized that he was sent unto earth to be the ale to the corruption of mankind. He took on a nom de plume in an alternate character: Edward Sharpe. Thus, the birth of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Sharpe is described as a man who has a duty to save mankind, but on the way, gets distracted by shitloads of girls. Sound familiar? His tunes are home-y, much like his song, "Home." and they are all reminiscent of something you can't quite put your finger on.

Here are my latest feelings towards the most recent crop of the music industry...

3. One Life Stand-- Hot Chip

This album was a huge disappointment after the infectiousness of "Ready for the Floor." Their tunes are more mellowed and less frenzied, more commercialized than original. There's nothing sadder than seeing good bands get lost in fame. This album was a huge letdown for me. "One Life Stand" doesn't even sound like the title of a Hot Chip song. It sounds more like a cheesy soap opera.

2. Transference-- Spoon

This album was solid. The thing I like about Spoon is that they are very consistent with their music. Their style never strays. Still the same ol' gritty rock sound I fell in love with.

1. Of the Blue Colour of the Sky-- Ok Go

I am in love with this album. It's a little less pop-ish and a little more modern-indie than the stuff they've done in the past and I like that. You can tell that more thought was put into this album, whereas their stuff before was less polished. Their riffs are tight, the melodies even tighter, and some of the harmonies are hella complex. "Needing/Getting" specifically struck me. It's such a solid indie rock anthem.

This is so so so sick.

I've been diggin the grime lately. I just made this huge, weirdass transition from hella chill indie to filthy dub. I'm not sure why, but my ears can't get enough. I tried listening to some Neon Indian the other day....it didn't go down too well.

FLUX PAVILION. Damn son, this shit's amazing. It's kinda like some kind of new-wave dub. Not too hard, but very experimental. The sounds are soo fuggin weird and at times sound like bowels but idk, i guess my ears like that shit now...

Today, however, was a completely different experience. The legendary YEAH YEAH YEAHS WERE LIVE IN SINGAPORE. My friend and I managed to nab a pair of tix, but the seats were shit. We somehow managed to sneak through security quite badass-ily and got from our shitty-nosebleed-section-seats down to the main floor right next to the stage. We were MERE METERS AWAY FROM THE GODDESS HERSELF. While playing the finale, which was Maps acoustic, there was a second of silence while she paused for a climactic effect and I screamed out, THEY DONT LOVE YOU LIKE I LOVE YOU! And some other guy was like, YEAH THEY DONT! It was epic. She holla-ed at us!! That sweetheart Karen-O. It basically made my life. Regardless of seat though, her voice is even BETTER live, which really surprised me. Not to mention she wrecks crazy shit on stage with her ridiculously hot moves and hotter costumes. She kept spitting water like it was fiyahhhh. Karen O= SICK.
For the finale, she dropped Maps acoustic which almost made me cry. It was beautiful to say the least. I've never felt that much emotion in a concert before...legit life changing as cheesy as it may sound.

Italian Vitalic first came onto my radar when I heard the remix of one of my favorite songs, Ultraviolence by Heartsrevolution. His most recent song, Poison Lips has had me trancing for the past week. Not to mention, the music video is completely sickening [i mean that in the highest of praises] and the azn girls in it are fucking hot [no homo]! This guy really has impeccable soft-dance taste. Vitalic's Second Lives remixed by the Bloody Beetroots is a lethal combination of two big electro personalities which amounts to an eargasm pretty much...yummmy.

Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo [Bloody Beetroots] and Steve Aoki have joined forces to create a group of epic proportions-- they are Rifoki.
Rifoki's concept is far different from the up-beat electro that is often assumed from their household names, but their latest project is a step back to basics. Back to their roots-- an appreciation of hard rock and screamo. I'm a huge fan of Rifoki partly because my own musical progression followed the same path.

Bring me the Horizon, Chiodos, Dance Gavin Dance-- they've always had a place in my heart. Deep down, I'm a screamo-whore. And apparently so are Rifo and Aoki.

My New Years resolution has decidedly been to expand my music horizons. This is going to take a lot of commitment though seeing as there are 239829035 genres of music today...and I can't keep up. Sometimes I just can't be fucked to be in the music-know all the time and resort to following Nylon's/Fader's playlists. But I am for sure going to become more knowledgeable in scratching/turntablists. What they do seriously epitomizes the beauty of modern day musical expression.

Can only be described as a-band-that-wants-to-share-pyscahdelic-acid-trip-experiences-with-you. [See "Should've Taken Acid With You" below. Fave song.] They are obvious wannabe children of the 70's born into the wrong era but makin the most of it. Their album Psychic Chasms is wistful, up-beat, and synth-y. Just the type of stuff i dig.

They say nothing good lasts. This seemed true for long-time love of mine Arctic Monkeys. Their album was still good of course, but after two consecutive amazingggg albums, this was sort of a let-down. ALEX TURNER I STILL LOVE YOU!

Cutie patootie olivia hesketh basically had me singin "I'm gonna take you out tonight! I'm gonna make you feel alright!" every fucking second of the day. Catchy shit, stuck on repeat.

Nothing like MGMT despite the plethora of comparisons. Manners was refreshing and i really dig that new synth-pop-indie type sound. The shrill voice in sleepyhead will never be forgotten.

Shit, i actually think this might have been released in 2008...but oh well. Amazing. Hit it off hard for their first album. Every track was diverse and better than the last. Hella memorable.

After 3 albums that didn't fare too well, Phoenix's latest album was a huge success. Phoenix's album had the musical technicality of intellectuals but also the creativity of artists. Combined was an album that virtually lacked nothing and left me a Lizstomaniac through and through.

Hot Chip is BACK. After Made in the Dark's ubiquity and hype died down...we just kind of never saw Hot Chip. I was starting to wonder where the hell they went-- mysterious plane crash? Kidnapping? Got roofied and date raped? I don't really know but I'm glad to find that they're back. Their first single, Take It In is a bit different from the more dance-y "Do it do it do it do it do it do it now" of Made in the Dark.
But, unsurprisingly is just as catchy and dance-able.

By now, most of you have probably heard about the new rock super-group, Them Crooked Vultures. The band consists of Dave Grohl [Foo Fighters, Nirvana], John Paul Jones of Led Zep, and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme. This band is just...its just sick. So apparently rock and roll is going through some tough times, which makes me want to cry, but TCV is def trying to revive rock n roll.

"Rock'n'roll doesn't exist anymore. Sure people are playing rock from every era, and musicians are producing their idea of what rock'n'roll should be. But, the epitome of rock music, the explosive sensation of sound, youth, and fury has become a part of history. i had my APUSH exam and Physics exam back to back. fan fucking tastic. But it was aite, at least that shits OVERRR. I treated myself to some frozen yogurt after school and silently huzzah-ed. The hardest part of my week is already over and now i can CHILL DOWN.
